Pet care associate

What I liked

I like learning new things about different animals and I especially enjoy caring for them as I cannot get any more animals at the moment. I enjoy teaching others about the proper care to the animals in my care and I love learning as much as I can from customers.

What I wish was different

I wish the communication was better especially with upcoming events in the store and changes in how we open and close, and although I do have one manager who does this well I feel she is the only one who communicates on a regular basis.

Advice

While I think that this experience has taught me valuable communication skills not only with the public but with my team as well, I will always recommend to advocate for yourself and the animals in your care. In my experience (I have worked here before) I am a hard worker and I found myself picking up work that my coworkers didn't do and to this day I have found many of my coworkers not doing their best with recovery or checking on food and water levels for the animals. Please don't let others take advantage of you, do your best at your job and if someone is slacking call them out on it that's the best advice I can give.

What I liked

Petsmart is an awesome company with amazing culture. The people are so inviting. One thing I enjoyed was that everyday, there was a "mini" lesson on various topics such as communication, relationship-building, customer experience, and so much more.

What I wish was different

Due to covid, this ended up being more like an externship rather than internship where I did not get to work on many projects, rather learn.

Sometimes the hours were a little early and I had to be there at 4am, or I'd have to work from 9pm-2am

What I liked

It was a really fun work environment. I was able to work with and learn things about many different animals and I also enjoyed interacting with their owners.

What I wish was different

I do wish that this job had more training of how to care for animals when I was first hired. A lot of my knowledge I gained at this job I had to research on my own because there was almost no information given to me during my training about proper animal care or about the products we sold.

Advice

Don't be afraid to branch out and try new things. I learned a lot of things while working at PetSmart, and not just things about animals. Don't be afraid to approach people and start up conversations, it helps build social skills and gets you more practice for thinking on your feet.

They put a lot of work into making sure they have one of the most beneficial internship programs in the country. I really enjoyed how close I got with the other 40 interns at their corporate office in Phoenix.

Nothing, it was really a great experience.

Advice

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try working in a state or region that you're not from or have never been to. This is time of our lives where we get to choose what comes next!

What I liked

I really connected with my co-workers and many of the animals there. I still keep in touch with them and whenever I go back home I go to see them. I have every intention to return to them when I'm done with college.

What I wish was different

I wish that the petsmart that i transferred to in Tucson wasn't so different and wasn't such a horrible experience for me. The only good thing that Tucson petsmart did was really showed me how much I treasured my home petsmart pet hotel.

Even with a job you enjoy, not every day is going to be a good day, but you still have to do your best no matter what.

If you do not like pets then this is definitely not the place to work. It is a really fun environment and you get to see a lot of different animals, especially if you work in Pet Care.
