About Philadelphia Legal Assistance

For 20 years, Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) has provided free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families in Philadelphia.

About 30% of the people in Philadelphia live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level. For those who are low-income, elderly, or disabled, our legal assistance is often crucial for them to protect their homes, their children, their safety, and their livelihood. PLA is dedicated to helping those who cannot afford legal counsel navigate the legal system and understand and safeguard their rights.

Legal Intern

May 2019 - November 2019 Philadelphia, PA
“Unlike most undergraduate legal internships, I was given the discretion to work in matters typically reserved for law students. My daily tasks would include contacting clients, drafting motions, observing court, and working on custody and domestic violence cases. In various occasions, I sat in on meetings to reform Civil Gideon in Philadelphia, was exposed policy reforms, allowed to conduct client intakes, and staffed the Help Center in Philadelphia's Help Center. The experience I gained from this position not only advanced my professional development, but reformed my perception of advocacy standards.”
