I loved being able to work hands on with the community and really feel like I was making a difference. I learned so much about legislation in Wisconsin/the midwest regarding reproductive healthcare, as well as how to have productive conversations about equity, human rights, and the controversial issue of abortion access. This summer, of all summers, was a very important summer to be active. I was connected to resources on how to pursue law school education and made some great connections in potential mentors.
What I wish was different
I wish I had more time, and I wish my hours were a bit more consistent. I loved being able to balance having fun, traveling, and relaxing over the summer + going to my internship, but I wish there were more in person opportunities more often. Though, given the looming threat of COVID, this is hard to navigate!
Advice
Political and legal advocacy work is so important, but also very emotionally challenging. If you are going to take a position like this on, I would highly recommend planning to work in self care time and reaching out to your coworkers when you need help.

Advice
I did a lot of campaigning by phonebanking, which can be quite draining, but it’s best to remember the end goal of keeping funding intact for Planned Parenthood clinics.
