I love my coworkers and their passion for the work and the people we educate every day. My supervisors are incredibly kind and flexible so I was able to come out to everyone as trans this year and I’ve received support from everyone there! There’s no place like it. We’re really a little family.
What I wish was different
I wish we interacted with the Native staff more, and that the museum would have approved the union in order to improve pay and safety regulations for our job, which can often be hazardous to us or the visitors.
Advice
Come with an open mind and learn as much as you can. Your experiences here will be completely new and humbling- let little kids teach you how to dance if they offer! Be patient when you’re asked “Is that real fire/food?” Everyone comes from somewhere, and nobody now comes from the place that you’re portraying, so give them a break!
