Established in 1959, the membership of the Port Jefferson EMS is a volunteer/career EMS system located in Suffolk County, New York, approximately 50 miles east of New York City, and approximately 1 mile from Port Jefferson Ferry Terminal and the Long Island Railroad. Port Jefferson EMS provides emergency medical service to a population of approximately 30,000 citizens who reside in a 16 square mile area of Suffolk County. In addition, Port Jefferson EMS provides EMS protection to 1 million yearly visitors of the Port Jefferson Village, 30,000 daily commuters of the Long Island Rail Road – Port Jefferson Branch, 2400 students and faculty of 3 school districts, 7 apartment complexes, 1-500 apartment over 55 complexes, and 2-250 bed hospitals.
Port Jefferson EMS operates with over 75 career/volunteer Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) based out of 1 Station. The service operates 3-Advanced Life Support ambulances, 1-24/7 career paramedic responder, and a community transport ambulance.
Port Jefferson EMS has the responsibility for protecting the citizens and property of Port Jefferson, Village of Belle Terre, Mt. Sinai, and Advanced Life Support Emergency Medical Services to the Miller Place Fire District.
Port Jefferson EMS responds to technical rescue as well as providing first response life safety to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards throughout these communities.
We will maintain a higher standard of care than New York State (NYS) and will continually strive to improve our service through offering continuing education and outreach as it pertains to the community’s safety and wellness. Our membership remains committed to the advancement of the Emergency Medical Service system and how this system can benefit our community.
