Business Development/Foreig Trade Zone Intern

June - August 2018 • Corpus Christi, TX

What I liked

I loved the internship program that POCCA offered. The program was well organized, scheduled and receptive to feedback. Tasks assigned during the internship were challenging yet manageable and they helped me expand my skills and allowed me to work where I was best fit. The staff at POCCA were very supportive, always available, and they had a genuine interest in preparing me for my duties at The Port and for the future.

What I wish was different

There's very little I would have changed about my experience at The Port. I was able to attend meetings, perform research, create reports, and learn about the maritime industry and its partners. If I had to pick something to change, I would have liked to have gained some sales experience. Much of the sales were left to staff which is understandable because of their magnitude however, gaining sales experience on the job would add value to the internship, even if we are just working to sell ourselves and our skills.

Advice

My advice to anyone interested in this internship would be to ask as many questions as possible and soak up as much knowledge as you can. The Port offers a very real-life experience for their internship and you can gain a lot simply by listening and inquiring. With so many different departments, there is something new to learn on every day of the job and it is important to take advantage of that opportunity while it's in front of you.
