IT Intern

June - December 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I liked collaborating with other interns on a large, visible project. I enjoyed working along with the kind, helpful people that make up the company. I got valuable experience in technologies which are relevant to my major and future positions I'll be in. Ultimately, the experience has given me confidence and a sense of preparedness for whatever might come after school.

What I wish was different

I had a difficult time with the 8-hour workday plus at least 2 hours of cumulative commuting five days a week. I understood I would be commuting going into the internship, but it drained me worse than I imagined. It was constructive, since I know now what I want to prioritize a shorter distance between me and my future jobs.

Advice

Be motivated, ask questions, keep learning, and try to have fun!

Undergraduate Business Intern

May - August 2019 • Portland, OR

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work, learn from, and network with professionals related to the field I am interested in. I appreciated everyone's willingness to answer any questions i had to help me post undergraduate. I liked how much Portland General Electric cares for their interns and genuinely wanting to help their interns.

What I wish was different

The commute to the internship was the only thing I wish that was different. Since Portland General Electric is located in downtown portland and parking is expensive and limited, Trimet was my only option to get to my internship everyday.

Advice

Be open to learning new things and asking questions. Also, take advantage of all opportunities that you are given to network and meet professions. Networking is so important as it helps you "get your foot in the door".

Maintence/warehouse intern

June - September 2018 • Boardman, OR

What I liked

I gained the valuable hands-on experience along with good social skills with people who aren't at the same level as me and how to address them. I enjoyed this experience and made some great friends and got some certification and am hoping that they will allow me to come back again.

What I wish was different

I wish they offered more overtime. Overtime was very scarce and hard to come by this year because of specific circumstances but all together i wouldn't want much to be different it was an amazing job and I was lucky to get it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and try new things while also being open to new ideas. Everyone has a little bit different way of getting the job done and that is okay just learn what works best for you. Also enjoy your self and this experience you get to have because it is sometimes once in a lifetime, so make the best of it and have fun.
