Construction Project Management Intern

June - September 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

The amount of people who wanted to help me was flattering. I came from a smaller General Contractor in the same intern position and the employees were not as helpful as I thought they should be. However, at Power anytime I had a look of question on my face somebody was already asking me to ask them a question. Also, the amount of activities they give their interns outside of working on projects is amazing. We had three different outings we could have gone on to bond with other interns and full-time employees.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would have changed is the location of my job site. I lived about an hour and half away from the city and the job site was on the furthest part of the city. I would have liked to be closer so that I didn't spend so much time driving and more time learning about the industry.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is too stick your neck out when you are not sure about a certain situation. I was told to tell one of our subcontractors workers to leave the job site because he wasn't following the rules (wearing headphones in a working job site) and I was really nervous to do that. Since my PM told me to do this, I asked my PE to help me out and when he did help me everything ran smoothly and we figured out what to do with the misbehaving laborer.
