Prairie State Legal Services

Outreach Fellow

July 2019 • Joliet, IL

What I liked

Lovely team, lovely mission!

What I wish was different

It was a bit of an adjustment going from campus life (and dressing), to law firm office life, but not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Advice

Even if you plan on going into government or private work in the future, I would really recommended working in a non-profit for at least a summer or a semester. While many non-profits only focus on a few main issues, you really see how issues intersect when working at a non-profit.

Law Intern

May - August 2019 • Galesburg, IL

What I liked

I loved the small atmosphere of Prairie State and how I was exposed to such a variety of law. As an undergrad, this was especially useful in narrowing down my interests. I worked closely with my supervising attorney, and since the office is small, I received an amount of individualized attention I don't think would have been possible at a larger firm.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been slightly more structured. There were some advantages to doing things on the fly and learning as I went, but I would have liked to have known a little more right off the bat what expectations would be for my position and what I could expect to get out of the experience.

Advice

I would tell other prospective interns to not walk away from an experience simply because it is unpaid. Especially in the field of law, undergraduate paid internships are hard to find, so make sure you are seeing the value in the unquantifiable benefits and building your professional network.
