Precision Castparts Corp.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June - September 2019 • Rockaway, NJ

What I liked

Precision Castparts Corporation is a large scale manufacturing company focused on high technology forgings, materials testing, and CAD/CAM modeling designing for aerospace companies worldwide for companies like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, GE Aviation, Rolls Royce, and others. The company culture allowed me to become more versatile and expand my skillset. I was able to schedule my week in different departments, from the CAD office to destruction testing laboratories, in order to gain further insight on not only the work behind these important positions, but how the company functions as a unit.

What I wish was different

I wish that my summer term was longer! I loved having my own projects to work on and having a company open to my optimization ideas, and allowing me to put them into action. My summer internship reaffirmed that I am choosing the right career path and doing what I love.

Advice

As a rising sophomore under my last interning experience, I was nervous that I would not be knowledgable enough about CAD modeling or materials science background. I soon realized that it is okay to not know everything; companies have the expectation that you are there to learn from them. Also, always be open to sharing your ideas. Engineering is yes, heavily backed by science and math principles, but different perspectives and approaches are the great foundation to innovation.

Aeronautical Engineering Intern

May - October 2020 • Port St. Lucie, FL

What I liked

I firstly would like to thank FAU for the opportunity of bringing Atlantic Precision INC (A branch of PCC) through the internship and career fair. It made it so easy to touch base with numerous employers and to expand current knowledge in my field of study through hands-on work. I loved being able to help the engineering team improve manufacturing methods and existing operations by writing new operation sheets. I really liked that I was really able to take on responsibility during my time at API. I was able to ensure a smooth process during the parts life through the machine shop.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have communicated more effectively during my time as an intern. After my 4th month I realized that communication is key when working as a team. It took me until my last month into my internship to realize that communicating effectively increases through put and creates a work flow amongst the employees.

Advice

I used the time as a learning experience for my career. Go into the internship with an open mind and use the experience as a way for you to learn by being as hands on as possible to learn by trial and error. I learned so much more by being thrown into a fast pace work environment and having to figure things out on my own.

melt shop mechanical engineer

January - August 2018 • Morgantown, PA

What I liked

Good pay. They treated us like real engineers.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more prepared, there is a large rang of jobs that a person can be asked to do at a time.

Advice

Make friends with the operators,if they like you they will help you with most things, if not they wont do a thing for you. The operators do not like extra paperwork so don't expect them do do it if its not required by safety or quality.

Electrical / Mechanical Intern

January - August 2018 • Morgantown, PA

What I liked

The workload and different tasks on a day to day basis were awesome. You had a very wide range of projects that you could work on and you got to work one on one with other engineers. With a small employee population at my site, you had a chance to meet everyone and work with everyone at some point. They kept it engaging and would give great feedback after presentations and 1 on 1 review.

What I wish was different

I personally really liked my experience and don't have much to say about what I would wish to be different. If I had one suggestion it would be that I wish communication would be stronger as a whole between departments and all employees.

Advice

My piece of advice would be to spend as much time as possible meeting the engineers and learning how everyone works together. Having trust and good communication between everyone will better your experience. Do as much as you can to offer help in a project and ASK for help if you need it!

Supervisor

May 2016 - January 2017 • Grafton, MA

What I liked

This co-op provided a multitude of rewarding challenges. I enjoyed my time with PCC greatly compared to other companies I worked for. They were very to-the-point, which demonstrated their expectation of efficiency in all projects I worked on. I was able to take on whatever projects or responsibilities I wanted, even things I've never imagine a co-op doing.

What I wish was different

Nothing.

Advice

If you expect to be sitting at a desk all day on your phone, this is NOT the role for you. Be a go-getter and you will be challenged and busy all day long.
