Marketing Intern

September - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

did real work that applied to the marketing field, but was not stressful and provided in a way an intern can do and learn from. Worked on cool projects for their clients from MLB, UFC, Olympics, authors, and more. Company also managed a compiling a fruitful internship experience despite dealing with an unprecedented pandemic and moving the internship entirely online.

What I wish was different

I wish they provided more examples and detailed instructions in what they are looking for when completing projects. Hard to create/do projects when the standard is unknown.

Advice

This internship provides lots of opportunities for growth if you put the work in to seek it. The people there are very eager to help you with any concerns and genuinely care. If you are looking to break into the sports management field, they provided lots of experience and knowledge.

Analytics Support Intern

February - May 2021 • Mineola, NY

What I liked

I liked that we worked on different projects each week, which means a lot of things to explore. We covered a lot of areas in terms of baseball whether it's a player evaluation or arbitration packages or agency recruiting etc. My employer John was really helpful and we could go up to him with anything and he guided us in any way possible. Also, interacting with so many other interns from different universities in the USA was a great experience and one of the things I liked the most.

What I wish was different

I just wish this would have been an in-person internship and I also think that more one-week projects should be given initially which can guide interns who have no clue about what baseball is.

Advice

If you are really into baseball or a sports agency is kind of what you feel getting into in your career, this internship will teach you everything. If you are not someone who is interested in baseball you'll struggle.

Analytics Support Spring Intern

February - May 2021 • Orange, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to get an insight into how analytics are used in the sports industry. Also, it was great for me to be able to say that I got experience in the industry. Also, the overseer was quite willing to work with us and was very flexible.

What I wish was different

One thing that I would like to have done more was to have seen more of the entire process as opposed to just the data side of things. I also would have liked to have been able to hear from other workers at the company besides just the one person we worked with throughout the semester. A more impactful project would also have helped.

Advice

Do not expect to be doing any work that is actually used by the company. You will be working on projects weekly instead.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • Mineola, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the hands-on work within this position and found the structure of the internship to be extremely valuable as someone looking to go into the agency sector of the sport industry. I gained a great deal of knowledge on creating marketing plans as well as social media marketing. I really liked the creativity and team collaboration associated with this position. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone looking to work for an agency.

What I wish was different

Advice

Communication and responsibility are key to succeeding in this experience since there is a great deal of group work associated with working on a team.

Marketing Intern

May - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved being able to experience what it was like working in a sports agency environment for the first time (remotely). John was an awesome internship coordinator that showed us the basics of how sports agencies are run. He was great at sharing his vast knowledge of the industry with us and I will certainly look back on the information I learned here in the future. My favorite part of this internship was being able to sit in a sponsorship deck meeting with MLB legend Carlos Baerga.

What I wish was different

A few things. First, I wish there were more opportunities to sit in on client meetings so that I could pick up on how the dialogue and information is presented to clients. Also, for the next batch of interns, it would be beneficial for each intern to be assigned 1 client to promote throughout the summer with a more organized structure to it.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give to future interns is to really take advantage of how much John and his co-workers know about working within the sports-business industry by being more engaged during the weekly meetings.

Data Analytics Intern

May - August 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved how flexible the internship was. Rather than having a strict schedule, we were allowed to work throughout the week whenever was best with us. I also liked the subject matter. I am a huge baseball fan, and it was fun applying the things I have learned about data analysis and visualization to a topic I am passionate about. Finally, working closely with students from across the country gave me valuable experience in knowing how to communicate well with others different than me and how to work remotely with a team to produce a final product.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to meet and work alongside other employees of the company, such as members of the analytics department. Mr. Weber was terrific and did a great job running the internship, but it would be interesting to meet others in the organization to see other aspects of what the company does.

Advice

I would suggest bringing strong data visualization skills to the internship. Most of the projects required showing our findings graphically or visually in some way. I would recommend brushing up on data visualization techniques in Excel, R, or some other programming language. Also, knowledge of baseball is very helpful, but not required. Mr. Weber set us up with the information and background we need, so this is a great internship for analytical experience whether you are knowledgeable about baseball or not!

Analytics Support Intern

February - May 2021 • Mineola, NY

What I liked

I liked how we got to work on a variety of projects in teams. We did projects on player evaluation, undervalued players, hypothesis testing, arbitration packages, free agency recruiting, and much more. It was nice to get real experience working in sports analytics. Also, if you had any questions John was very helpful in answering them.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was in person, but being remote was still fine because I got to meet a bunch of great people all over the US. Also, I wish we got to do the project on international players but was unable to due to other things with PTSE.

Advice

The projects are weekly and biweekly so try out different analytical software for each project. I didn't but I wish I did. It is good to learn new things.

Marketing Intern

February - May 2021 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The structure of the program is tremendous, especially if you are in the early stages of discovering your career path and are interested in the business realm. It is very organized, with weekly projects outlined and specified with the goals and expectations in mind for it. Therefore, you will always have something to do and not a whole lot is left ambiguous.

What I wish was different

Not a lot, but the wide variety of projects can bridge over several different fields. Perhaps the program could be split into a "Marketing" internship and a "Agent and Partnerships" program.

Advice

I know you hear this all the time, but what you get out of this program is exactly whatever you put into it. Yes, you are all given specific projects to work on, but the level of detail and experience that you get out of it depends on how much you are willing to spend on it.

Analytics Support Intern

September - December 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the hands on experience received in this internship interacting with many different aspects of the baseball agency business. We were given guidelines on how to complete projects and they allowed us the freedom to complete them using our own creativity. You get an inside view of how the agency side of things operates within the baseball operations industry. We also got to sit in on calls with clients or potential clients to see how PTSE agents handled themselves.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up and ask lots of questions! Other interns will have various degrees of experience but don't let that deter you from actively participating in this internship. You can learn quite a bit from your fellow interns I know I did!

Marketing Intern

September - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed this internship as it made the best of being remote by connecting the interns with interns from universities across the country. This would not have been as likely or possible in an in-person internship. The remote nature also helped to improve my communication skills and improved my knowledge of various different programs and softwares. I also enjoyed the different types of content and market research we were tasked with doing. It was also a perfect mix of being structured, but flexible if we ever needed help or more time with a project.

What I wish was different

I wish it were in-person, however, given the circumstances during COVID this was not possible. There were also some projects that were scheduled, but they were not able to be completed because they were time sensitive. This too was excusable, however, as these projects needed to be completed as soon as possible while we were busy with other work.

Advice

I would definitely recommend working for PTSE as it expanded my network not just locally, but across the country and the subject matter of the work we were doing was both interesting and needed by the company. This was a "hands-on" internship despite being remote.

Analytical Support Intern

August - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was a great team environment, every intern was so passionate about the game of baseball that it was easy to have discussion on what the best practices would be for each given project. It was enjoyable working with each other to grow as a team and individually.

What I wish was different

I wish this had been an in-person internship; although, had it not been remote there would have lacked that diversity that made this internship so great.

Advice

Be comfortable with extracting data from websites like Fangrpahs, baseball-savant, etc.

Data Analytics Intern

September - December 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed the new projects each week which kept things fresh. I also liked how we were split into groups which really forced us to be good communicators especially for a remote job.

What I wish was different

We were a special case because we had to complete this internship virtually, but I would have liked to meet twice a week especially during our tougher projects. Meeting once a week sometimes prevented us from being on the same page during the end of the week.

Advice

I would say ask plenty of questions and be proactive with the work. There is a lot to learn but you have to take the initiative.

Analytics Support Intern

September - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the flexibility of this being a remote job opportunity and no set time commitment per day. Without the flexibility given, I would have been unable to pursue this opportunity. The best part of this experience was working on projects that are actually used. The most important thing I look for in an internship is a learning experience with real-world projects and this internship delivered on that.

What I wish was different

The two things I wish would have been different are smaller teams and more complex problems to explore during the internship.

Advice

Be sure to ask questions and gain as much knowledge as you can.
