What I liked

When I was an intern, the office was mostly full and everyone was extremely helpful to each other. I found that it was an amazing experience to really learn new skills. I was published a few times on the Press' website as well and on paper. I had the opportunity to return as a Freelance journalist. The environment was extremely warm and friendly.

What I wish was different

The internship itself was great; however, my experience as a freelancer was a different story. I felt like it was disorganized and there were no clear goals. I was told to sign up for a story via excel but was not given further direction after the completion of a story. As a result, I was not paid for a few articles I had submitted because I was not told that it was to go to a specific address vs my superior I had been in contact with. As a result, I resigned from the freelance position due to the major frustrations I was experiencing.

Advice

I'm not sure how the Press is doing today, I know a lot of my peers that I worked closely with are no longer there. I think that if something is unclear, definitely ask questions. Or if there are no guidelines for something, ask whomever your supervisor is to be more clear on what your responsibilities are. I think it's a good stepping stone/foot in the door if you're trying to join the journalism field.

What I liked

The opportunity to experience journalism on a professional level and dip my toes into different opportunities within the field. I enjoyed meeting fellow journalists and getting the chance to cover events I would have otherwise not attended.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given more thoughtful attention throughout the internship. There were some days I was given no tasks or assignments and had to spend the whole day sitting in the office (which was not a particularly warm or friendly atmosphere). I wish they would have given me the chance to pursue my own pitches rather than always assigning me something. Also, I don't think I ever received feedback on my work.

Advice

I would say patience is key. This is a great first journalist experience, but it certainly is not the most exciting.
