I wish the family did not have dogs. They had three very large dogs that were not potty trained.

What I liked

I liked being able to have a problem and figuring it out on my own. I enjoyed the outdoors and being resourceful when the job got tough. It was hard work, but I enjoyed how physical it was and being in the outdoors.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more people at my job site to work with. Most of the days it was just me and maybe one other person. I would have enjoyed being with others and working along side of them.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share is that this job is very physically challenging and can be dangerous at times. If you watch your surroundings and are constantly paying attention to what you are doing then there shouldn't be a problem

This job was very applicable to the degree I'm currently pursuing. I was able to use a lot of the information I've been learning. The schedule was also very flexible.

Make sure to be on the same page as the parents as to what they want their children to work on. Keep the line of communication open.

Empowering the tutee- even though I was teaching, it was she who achieved each step

More hours and more respectful attitude from the tutee

Advice

Find the right place between the lines: as a tutor, you are neither a parent, baby-sitter, traditional classroom teacher, nor sports coach. The role is unique. Be flexible. Adjust your lesson plan if it's not getting across the concepts to the tutee. Notice how they have fun and incorporate that into learning - there's even more freedom than in the classroom. Use your own personality to be the best tutor you can be, and remember that it's your job to teach, coach, encourage, clarify, and listen, but not to DO the work for the tutee. The student is responsible for his or her own learning.
