What I liked

I enjoyed working over the summer because it gave me an opportunity to make money while I was on break. My job was relatively simple and easy and i enjoyed making connections with the family. I recently returned and caroled to them and it just reminded me how great it is to live in such a small community where you can connect with people.

Special Needs Tutor

May - August 2019 • Danville, CA

What I liked

This was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been through. I worked as a tutor with a child who was eight years old and had moderate special needs and learning disabilities. At the beginning of the summer, she was having extreme reading issues. At the end of last school year, her special day teacher expressed concern to her mother about moving her forward in the next academic school year. We took things day by day and worked hard together. We started with sight words and worked our way up to more challenging tasks, getting creative with memory aid and artistic cues. Eventually, by the end of the summer, she was able to read with little to no help from me and is caught up with her classmates. I am now pursuing a career in Special Education. The lessons I gained from this little girl were far more significant than anything I could have ever taught her.

What I wish was different

If I could do anything different I would have liked to somehow get this child involved with other children who experienced the same challenges. I witnessed a lot of negative feelings and self-doubt in her. I think it's important that children become aware that everyone learns at their own pace, and this does not make them any less intelligent.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience is to continue to seek out different work experiences because you might become interested in a field that you never expected to. Though I knew I always wanted to work with kids, I never thought special education would be an option for me until meeting this family.
