Intern

August - December 2021 • Rochester, NY

What I liked

Plenty of opportunities to learn beyond the job. The Rochester site holds lots of meetings that interns are encouraged to attend, so you can learn about sustainable practices, innovative packaging designs, and what companies are currently up to. Work with major companies, design jobs occur often, and during down time you are encouraged to walk around and meeting internal connections.

What I wish was different

I think communicating with suppliers more would have been beneficial. My manager did a lot of this, and I would feed questions to customers through her. I think that personal connection and navigating this relationship would have helped.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions! When I was hired, I didn't know much about heat-sealing packaging and graphic design (which is the majority of the job). As long as you ask, they are willing to teach you so you can learn, but without asking, they heavily rely on you taking the initiative to learn rather than them teaching you.
