Prudential

UI/UX Researcher Intern

June - August 2019 • Roseland, NJ

What I liked

Got to actually conduct user testing on real users (internal software). Lots of intern activities, ways to meet the executives if you wanted to, and my team members were great to work with.

What I wish was different

They do not really have a solid UX team, there are a few UX/UI experts that are strewn about teams so you will most likely not have a team or someone else to bounce ideas off of, or to learn from. Very very self-starting.

Sales Intern

June - August 2019 • Plymouth, MN

What I liked

I loved working with the team I was on. Everyone was so caring and took the time to get to know me outside of work.

What I wish was different

Nothing! I wish it was longer but I had to come back to college, so that wouldn’t work!

Advice

Go out of your way to meet people it’ll pay off, and you get out of it what you put into it!

Software Engineer Co-Op

September 2023 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to see what code at an enterprise level looks like and the opportunity to challenge myself in learning new technologies and adapting to the methodology of the team and development workflow.

What I wish was different

I wish the duration of the co-op experience was longer.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be the first one to reach out and set up 1:1's with every member of your team and those who might not be (especially if they're part of a team you're interested in learning more about). Be proactive in seeking out work and expanding on assignments you've been given.

Finance Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the team-oriented environment. For example, for our final project we had to work on a team to create a Financial Wellness Project. This is something incredibly unique about Prudential's culture that I find continuing to draw me back. I love the fact that there is such a large emphasis on the people, on growth, and on mentorship. On top of that, it was awesome to be in the city of Newark! The multiple Prudential buildings are absolutely beautiful and stunning -- it was a great experience being an intern.

What I wish was different

We were each assigned one mentor that was focused more on our career projection. Perhaps if we were assigned 1 or 2 other mentors on top of that, we could understand what it was like to work at Prudential from different experiences and backgrounds, therefore gaining a more unique perspective on the business itself. However, the culture, the work, and the people made the experience amazing.

Advice

If given the offer, totally TAKE IT! It was such a great opportunity meeting interns from all across the nation, getting assigned mentors, working on team projects, and getting a firsthand account of what it is like to work in the corporate world. Be inquisitive, ask questions, and reach out to people for coffee. There really is no experience like Prudential, so be positive and learn!

Actuarial Intern

June - August 2018 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

The program allowed for great experiences to network with other interns, employees in the full-time program, and senior leaders in the company. The work myself and many of the interns were tasked with had a real impact on the company and was meaningful work.

What I wish was different

Some of the events put on by the program seemed excessive and took me away from being able to be available for my manager

Advice

Take advantage of being able to meet as many people as possible over the 10 weeks. Also, don't be afraid to ask questions and make mistakes, you're not expected to be perfect, people want you to try your best and see how much you're willing to learn.

Unix Engineering & Database Support Intern

June - August 2018 • Roseland, NJ

What I liked

I got to meet people working in different fields aside from technology. The culture is very nice. Interns come from all sorts of age groups (even high schoolers). The work I did was substantial and different from what I'm used to, but I was able to learn quickly and get acquainted with my working schedule. Hours were flexible, in that you had to work 8 hours/day, but you can start and stop anytime. Full-time and returning offers are easy to come by as long as you put effort into your work and impress your manager.

What I wish was different

I would have liked working in Newark rather than in Roseland, as the commute would have been shorter. Also, the Newark offices look nicer, provide more activities, and provide better lunch options. I also felt overwhelmed the first day, as I was never told how to use the computer or phone on my desk.

Advice

Do the work and make connections to make this a worthwhile experience.

Recruiting and Marketing Intern

May - August 2018 • Irvine, CA

What I liked

Loved working for a large Fortune 500 Company. I was able to learn the ins and outs of recruiting and how to market to a large customer base.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have had access to more company resources as I was granted limited access because I was only an intern. But I was given access with accordance to the company policies so I can't complain too much.

Advice

Make sure to network where ever you are working. I made great connections with other employees and now have a broader working network for when I graduate.

Annuities Sales Intern

June - August 2018 • Shelton, CT

What I liked

I really liked Prudential. Well established intern program. With over 300 interns, there were great intern events and collaborative projects. Great company to work for, highly recommend.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more work to do. Often asked for work and looked for stuff to do, but the nature of a sales desk is more shadowing based as opposed to project based.

Advice

I would suggest staying hungry and learning as much as possible. Have to be aggressive and work hard for the return offer.

Mobile Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Newark, NJ

What I liked

I like the buildings in Newark and there are plenty more events that take place here compared to Roseland. I also enjoyed the work I was given. My goal is to become a full-stack developer for web or mobile platforms and this internship tested my abilities in both fields with plenty of mentors out there to support me.

What I wish was different

I would've liked working more on team projects since I was restricted to only working on my own project the entire summer. I also wish the office was nicer. Some of the other floors looked new and modern, but my floor looked like a big mosh of gray cubicles with little access to windows.

Advice

Network as much as you can! If you find that your work isn't aligned with what you want to do full-time, chances are there's another department at Prudential that can better suit your needs. This may also involve changing buildings or entering a non-tech department, so try to diversify your network so you can experience all sides of Prudential.
