Queens District Attorney's Office

Criminal Court Bureau Intern

July - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked the ability to gain exposure to the inside of a courtroom and the ability to interact with Assistant District Attorneys, paralegals, police officers, and in general, all aspects of the legal process.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of flexibility involved, such as not having a permanent desk, or reporting to various supervisors or higher-ups; I prefer stability.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions!

Gang Violence and Hate Crime Intern

June - August 2018 • Kew Gardens, NY

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to witness first hand how the criminal justice system operates. I was also glad to be able to form connections with current Assistant District Attorneys and detectives; it was a pleasure learning from them. I found watching trials about different cases very interesting, since I was able to observe how different types of crime are handled in the Queens Criminal Court. It was very rewarding to complete an assignment for an ADA and learn that my work was helpful in some way.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to write up research for the ADA's. However, this task was given to the law students, since they had more experience and teaching about it.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share from my experience would be for students to be confident in themselves and not feel intimidated when they first begin. All of the employees were extremely helpful and eager to offer their advice. In the office, I learned that the best way to learn was to be opened and communicate with the ADA's and members of the bureau.
