Red Hat

Product Marketing Intern

May - August 2023 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

I love working alongside my awesome colleagues and my managers, who taught me so much about the product, technology, and company culture. The work I was doing is meaningful and actually delivers impact to the business unit and the product line my team was under and responsible for. It also aligns well with my interests and majors at Miami University.

What I wish was different

The entire internship was remote. I wish that there could have been an opportunity to do hybrid work or a few onsite days to meet and network with my colleagues.

Advice

Don't be afraid to share your opinions, even if it's in front of several seniors, because your perspectives are unique and can be helpful to your team in various ways!

Interaction Design Intern

May - August 2022 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The culture - everyone was so nice, welcoming, and willing to help you. This is definitely a "bring your whole self" kind of workplace, and I really got to know the people on my team.

What I wish was different

This was both a blessing and a curse, but the culture is very lax. This means that you have to be pretty self-directed if you want to challenge yourself. Also, I wish I got to interact with other interns more (I was the only intern on my team).

Advice

The quality of your internship experience greatly depends on you! There are so many open doors at Red Hat - you just have to ask/advocate for it.

Sales Enablement and Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Raleigh, NC

What I liked

Red Hat was a great culture to start off the corporate world with. The people there are so friendly and welcoming, they want you to succeed. The intern program was great. There were 200 total interns globally, but around 58 in the Raleigh headquarters. I was the only one on my team which was nice to have individual treatment but other teams had up to 3 interns. It was close to my home where I grew up so I had the opportunity to save the money I earned and live at home which was great. I enjoyed a great night life and food around the city. It was an awesome experience. I am so thankful I had it because it opened so many doors for my future and gave me experience in the tech industry that I would not have had otherwise. They took linkedin headshots, reviewed resumes, and even had a mixer for the interns once!

What I wish was different

The interns had a tough time getting extended if they were on the HR team because of budget cuts. The intern program was changed this year due to the budget cuts and it did not allow for interns to be remote like in previous years. It was not clear from the beginning and it gave false hope to interns and their managers throughout the internship. I wish there were more intern social events specialized to your career interest verses other random events that weren't necessary related. Also-- intern's were definitely noticeable and full timer's called it "intern season" during the summer which kind of makes you feel less than them.

Advice

Cherish what you learn, take notes on a google drive so you remember because the technology is so complex!
