URP

June 2021 • Troy, NY

What I liked

The research offered was interesting and gave me insight into working in a research setting.

What I wish was different

RPI policy prevents you from doing research for the institution for credit unless you are paying for the summer semester. So I had to take a minimum wage.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2020 • Troy, NY

What I liked

Was able to find opportunities rather quickly, interesting work to do remote

What I wish was different

Wish I could do some physical experiments, but that is not really feasible in this time

Advice

Research is a great experience to put on your resume especially if you may return to academia (grad school) or going into R&D fields.

Biostatistician Intern

July - August 2020 • Troy, NY

What I liked

Deciding to join the Rensselaer IDEA’s Health Analytics Challenges Lab this summer was an intensive yet exciting learning experience in all aspects; I wouldn’t have chosen to do anything else with my summer instead. The pace of the course (which is essentially an internship) is lighting fast, but you learn twice as much as you would in a normal semester timeline because of it. If you’re really interested in the project you join, the work doesn’t feel like work at all.

NSF REU Student

June - August 2020 • Troy, NY

What I liked

The program coordinators were nice and my advisor was enthusiastic. We met daily.

What I wish was different

This was remote during COVID-19, so I wish it was in an actual lab.

Advice

Doing an REU online can be similarly rewarding to doing one in person.
