The job is very flexible. I could work whenever I wanted as long as I got my hours in. The actual research was also fun because it clearly showed I was making progress.

Campus Safety Student Worker

What I liked

The community of the officers and the student workers. They treat students/student workers like equals and are fun to banter with. Moreover, they were very effective at completing their duties.

What I wish was different

I wish my hours had been different but they were scheduled in a way that had to go around my class schedule.

Advice

Campus safety does a lot more than students typically think and it is a job that requires more serious responsibilities as a student worker, such as knowing how to navigate emergency calls and directing incidents to the correct authorities.

What I liked

I liked the amount of freedom I had, and the ability to go more in depth with fields I like than I can in classes.

What I wish was different

The strengths were also tied to some weaknesses. The lack of direction could also leave me confused on where to go. Working on preprocessing could also be frustrating at times.

Advice

Pick a good advisor, and pick a topic you are passionate about. Otherwise, it will be difficult and not enjoyable.

What I liked

I really enjoyed the classroom environment and watching the students grow throughout the month. Getting to know my co-workers (both other Rhodes students and experienced educators) was also great. We had a wonderful team, and they gave me a lot of advice for the future.

What I wish was different

I wish I had had a little more training because I went in the first day and had to basically make it up as I went along.

Its hard work and you're going to be tired but the kids are great!

What I liked

The training I received from the people at Rhodes was great. Being able to practically work independently in the lab allowed me to expose myself to challenging tasks throughout the experience.

What I wish was different

I wish I could’ve had more hours to conduct research and really hone my craft. It was hard to do some of the things due to lack of experience, but I slowly gained confidence in the field. I wish that there was more of an organized structure to the research program and learning how to do it.
