Roger Williams University

Summer Conference Assistant

May - August 2019 • Bristol, RI

What I liked

I really liked the team I worked with. I think that they alone made the job much more bearable and we all worked well together to complete our tasks in a timely manner.

What I wish was different

I wish that the job itself would have been a little more organized. I felt like there were a lot of situations that popped up that could have been avoided and handled better had the management team been a little more on top of things.

Advice

I would say that if you have a good attitude and don't mind rolling your sleeves up and doing real work, then this job is enjoyable. I would also advise people looking to do this job to make sure they have patience with it.

What I liked

I love working in this lab. It has been an incredible opportunity to gain lab based skills including learning how to spawn coral in a lab setting.

FIT Contact Tracer

August 2020 • Bristol, RI

What I liked

I personally got a lot of information and skills from the practice interview and the reviewing of my resume by the career center. I was able to greatly improve my resume including rewriting the tasks that each job had and formatting properly so it was easy to scan. The interview skills that I obtained were the quick summary of yourself in the beginning, highlighting your strengths in answers to questions, and asking important questions at the end of the interview.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish had been different about the mock interview was that my interviewer provided more constructive criticism because they really nit picked some of the aspects of my interview instead of providing information to improve it.

Advice

One piece of advise I would share is that when beginning an interview, it is important to introduce yourself with who you are, major, and involvements. Then you can move onto some accomplishments in the past and hope for the future after this interview.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

June - August 2019 • Bristol, RI

What I liked

I liked the freedom of being able to work independently and then check in with my boss at the end of the week to go over my progress. This experience allowed me to conduct individual research and also collaborate with a professor with expertise in the field.

What I wish was different

Instructions will not always be outlined perfectly for you. Sometimes you have to make educated decisions on how to go about solving a problem. I wish I had realized this at the beginning of the research so that I could have been more consistent with my work.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. It shows that you are genuinely interested in what you are doing and whoever you are working with will probably be passionate and love to answer your questions.

Being able to work with a small team to create an entire program from start to finish. I was able to see the process come full circle and also work in a constantly changing environment to adapt to new challenges.

What I wish was different

Nothing. The experience surpasses all expectations that I had going into it.

Advice

I would say that challenges consistently arise in the work environment. Even in the face of these challenges, taking a minute to use the resources that you have been given and problem solve in a clear and organized way will be of great use.

Research Assistant

September 2018 • Bristol, RI

What I liked

I loved getting hands-on experience working in a professional laboratory. I got to do work with molecular biology, genetics, and veterinary science. I helped on an ongoing research project studying shellfish disease in the New England Area. The lab was small and personal, and I became very comfortable with my coworkers.

What I wish was different

I only wish that I had a few hours per week, and got to work entirely through the summer instead of going home on August 1.

Advice

Other students should seek out as many experiences as possible and talk to professors about potential opportunities. I got this job by asking around until I found a lab with an opening. I would also tell other students to not be afraid of starting off their position as a volunteer. I volunteered in the lab for one semester, and then started getting paid my second semester. They offered me a position all the way through the summer, and I continue to work there to this day.

Summer Conference Assistant

June - August 2019 • Bristol, RI

What I liked

What I wish was different

While I enjoyed the work and camaraderie with my coworkers, I wish I had known about the management situation earlier - concerning the changes in who was leading the program and who would be leaving. These managerial shifts allowed for significant lapses in judgement which affected every aspect of the job - from daily tasks to wages - in a negative way. There were severe skips in the chain of communication and command everyday as tasks would be unassigned and then reassigned multiple times within a work day. There were also significant legal issues within the Summer Conference Department at Roger Williams during this time of changing hands as worker's rights were exploited by withholding payment for mandatory shifts outside regular hours. As workers we did not pursue any legal action for when we asked questions we were met with contention from our superiors or a simple deference of responsibility or ability to provide aid or solutions. However, I was satisfied when I was assured the next year's hirees would be treated differently - fairly - and would be overseen with dedicated management. This period of turnover made a stain on the memories from that job as well as the job itself.

What I wish was different

I wish that I was able to spend more time interning in this position as I really enjoyed it so much.

Advice

I would advise students applying to this position to know your strengths and offer the department new skills and ideas that have not been proposed to them before - make yourself stand out!

Advice

It is important to be welcoming and open minded towards the incoming students and families because you never know the situation they are in.
