I loved being able to work with amazing kids all summer. The staff is terrific, you meet so many kind people from all over the world. You also have the opportunity to network with physicians and nurses who come to camp to take care of the kids.

What I liked

This opportunity provideg me with amazing experiences working with kids of all different backgrounds. I learned how to plan programs for kids ages 7-17 that were accessible, adaptable, fun, and taught underlying life skills. While my primary job was to care for these kids for a week, it was really about creating an environment for these kids to just be ids for a week outside of everything else they had going on in their lives.

What I liked

In my role as a camp counselor, I had the amazing opportunity to spend my summer playing, laughing, and having fun, all while getting paid. Working at a camp for kids with serious illnesses was especially rewarding because I got to see the magic of camp, watching kids who often worry and prepare, transform into simply goofy kids. I loved making an impact on families, all while getting to have a great time. It was also a time of personal growth, teaching me a lot about myself and how to be a better team member.

What I wish was different

While it was amazing spending my summer away from home, I wish I could have been able to see my family more throughout the summer. I am from Maryland, so the move to Colorado was a bit far, but I am grateful for every minute of my amazing adventures.

Advice

In any job, especially when working with kids, you can't be afraid to be goofy. In order to do your job in the most effective manner you have to put yourself out there 100%, unafraid of the way people will look at you. If you open your heart, and be present in every moment, your experience will be truly life-changing.
