Rudd and Wisdom, Inc. Consulting Actuaries

Actuarial Intern

May 2018 • Austin, TX

What I liked

I have really enjoyed how detail-oriented this job is. It forces you to pay attention to every small detail on every calculation and package you create. This is a skill that serves anyone in any area of their career and life. In addition, I enjoyed how much I have been able to learn about the retirement benefits industry from an actuarial standpoint. I have done calculations and benefits packages for several different plans (both defined benefit and defined contribution plans), giving me a great background in one actuarial industry. I also really liked that I was able to leave work for a few hours 3 days a week so that I could further my education by taking a software design course at UT this summer. The experience this job has given me along with its flexibility has made it the perfect college job, and I’m happy to say I had a very productive summer working here.

What I wish was different

Nothing. I honestly really love the company I’m at because it’s so flexible and allows me to work during school. I learned a lot this summer and am very happy to have had such a great opportunity.

Advice

Try to put in quite a few hours when you start as an intern. There is typically quite a big learning curve at companies like mine, and I am still learning new things every time I go into work. So I think it was important for me to put in long weeks at the beginning of the summer to gain experience and learn to do the job well.
