In 1965, the truck sales business was in its infancy, with many small dealers spread around the country in a fragmented market. Marvin Rush and two partners opened their first dealership that year in Houston, Texas, a city that is a major crossroads for east-west truck traffic. But what set Marvin apart was his vision: to build a network of dealerships in the Southern Belt that would sell, lease and service trucks as well. In 1967, Marvin made his first 100-unit fleet sale of Peterbilt trucks and started a leasing company and a finance and insurance division.
As the Company grew, it continued to acquire dealerships in the Southern Belt, becoming the largest truck dealership in the country. By 1996, the Company had reached a critical mass and the time was ripe for taking the company public. The Rush IPO was the first automotive or truck dealer to go public and was listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol RUSH.
