Salt & Straw

Seasonal Scooper

May - August 2021 • Palo Alto, CA

What I liked

I absolutely loved the community of people I worked with. I met people from all different backgrounds and we all because extremely close over the summer I worked there. The customers were usually pretty demanding, but the team of people I worked with always were happy to give me advice or support when I needed it. I also found the way feedback was delivered to be incredibly helpful. My manager always made a point to check in with individuals who were on shift, to give feedback if needed.

What I wish was different

I wish schedules had been a little more flexible. Usually I was always able to find a cover if something came up, but since the staff was a bit small (which is no fault of the employer, COVID seriously impacted hiring) conflicts usually had to be put in 2 or more weeks in advance.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give is to be open to interacting and bonding with members of your community. You will thrive in this job if you are completely open to feedback and are willing to learn from your senior members.

What I wish was different

Advice

There's so much room for growth with this company. Working for a small, family-owned business in a huge city like San Francisco (and other huge cities like L.A., San Diego, Portland, and Seattle) is rare. So, use it to your advantage and really take the time to get to know the company and the history and make sure the owners know who you are. In other words, leave a lasting impression--both on management, and on customers.

Ice Cream Server

What I liked

My summer job was a great opportunity to experience Portland outside of Reed while building up on my soft skills and staying active. The free ice cream was an excellent perk too!

What I wish was different

Advice

I would advise other Reedies who are able to consider working off campus. It's a great way to meet new people and feel better grounded in our city!
