What I liked

The people I'm working with are very approachable and nice. I love that I get to work on design projects for my department to help me gain more job and design experience.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Come prepared with a printed portfolio. I was asked to bring three, but if yours is large enough to be viewed by three people at the same time, then that is fine.

Advice

Being selected for the RUMBA program (Research by Undergraduates using Molecular Biology Applications) gave me an amazing opportunity to have engaging experiences in a neurophysiology research lab . Not only was I able to actively collaborate on an ongoing isolated muscle experiment, I also received a significant amount of mentoring from my PI and the RUMBA program director. I learned and practiced writing a research paper suited for publishing and I gave multiple presentations to my peers and professors. If you meet the qualification requirements and are interested in pursuing biological research, I highly recommend applying for this summer program.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more staff, during the end of the Summer it got extremely hectic.

Strive to keep the separation of work and personal life. When you have a summer job it can be hard to “go home” when your mind is on work all the time. Still make sure you do fun things!! It is summer after all.

A great experience performing organic synthesis and learnjng how to conduct research. Working with the chemistry department allows you to network with professors, grad. students, and industry profeasionals.

What I wish was different

Department policy prevents chemical research from being done late into the evening or on the weekends as an undergraduate.

Advice

Try to apply to a research position during your Sophomore year, into your Junior year. This allows you a couple years to really get work done in a lab and make meaningful advances in a project.
