Cardiac Monitor Technician

July 2021 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

The people were welcoming. Gaining the knowledge through the education they provided was good and beneficial.

What I wish was different

I wish the nurses would take some of the things that happen more seriously. I also think that they should make more of an effort to put leads back on the patients.

Advice

Be patient. Know how to communicate effectively. I would also just say to write things down: things you have to do or things you told someone else to do because you jump around a lot and things pop up to where you have to stop what you're doing take care of something else and then come back to it. Sometimes its hard to remember what you were doing so just take notes.

What I liked

I really liked that they allowed the interns an opportunity to observe another department besides their own. All of the staff involved with the internship were very kind and available to answer questions and provide guidance.

Registered Nurse Intern

June - August 2019 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

I liked that we had the opportunity as interns to have additional experiences on different units. It gave me a great opportunity to experience another floor and see if it may be somewhere I would potentially see myself working.

What I wish was different

With having been from out of state the hardest part was finding housing in my own. They did offer summer housing on campus but I would have liked a few more options.

Advice

I advise people to go out side of their comfort zone and do something they may not typically do. Traveling out of state was not in my plan, However I ended up loving my experience and my internship and decided to take a job up there! If it wasn’t for the opportunity of the internship I would have never thought about leaving my hometown to try something different.

ICU Nurse Intern

June - August 2019 • Fargo, ND

What I liked

I loved that i was finally able to connect what I had been learning in class to real life scenarios. I felt like I learned more throughout the summer than i had in any of my classes. The nice thing about my internship was that I made connections with people that would eventually be helpful when needing references for future job experiences or even to solidify a job post graduation (this was the case for me). Nursing has many different specialities so it was nice to be able to see what it would be like working in the ICU and helped reassure my passion about working there.

What I wish was different

Honestly, NOTHING! I wouldn’t trade my internship experience for anything! The knowledge gained during this experience is irreplaceable.

Advice

DO IT, DO IT, DO IT! As I said above I don’t regret spending my summer completing an internship. I feel like I am better prepared for what my career will consist of and what my day to day will look like once I graduate. Even if you choose not to have an internship I suggest getting a job that will, in some way, help you excel in your career. I worked as a CNA for 5 years in nursing homes and then in the ER before I got my position as an intern. I know that at Sanford the internship application is extremely competitive and I believe that my work experience and connections made through other jobs are what put me in the position to get a job offer as an intern in my top choice department (ICU).

May 2018 • Thief River Falls, MN

What I liked

I enjoyed the variation from day to day work. When you show up int he morning you have no idea how the day will go, which patients you will serve, and what may or may not go so smoothly. I also really enjoy working with patients and being apart of their medical journey.

What I wish was different

I can't say I wish anything would have been different.

Advice

Do not get offended by people's comments towards you and if you miss a stick and need to re-stick someone for a second time, just know it happens.
