Satterfield & Pontikes Construction

project intern

May - August 2021 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

Extremely competent company that combined learning with on site experience. A great first internship and step into the construction field

What I wish was different

Enjoyed the experience and have kept in touch with a few of the people I interned with, wouldn't change anything.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible, no one at satterfield ever looked down upon me for not knowing something, they're very patient, understand, and enjoyed sharing their knowledge.

Field Engineer Intern

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I enjoyed being fully immersed within the construction of the LaGuardia Airfield Reconfiguration Project (LARP). I was able to fully interact and connect with superintendents, project managers, engineers, environmental teams, and subcontractors directly, making decisions that both impacted the project and construction management team themselves. I was granted the full-experience as a functioning member of the team, being relied on for certain deliverables, punch-list items, LEED certification, and working and directing subcontractors to conduct work needing to finish. I was able to experience and learn the physical lessons of what was taught in classrooms, and even more so outside of it. Additionally, the inclusion of "Lunch and Learn" lessons, from which the General Superintendent Campus Wide, Robert Kipp (a Norwich graduate), allowed everyone to learn what everyone else is doing, as well as something new to carry on with them through their careers.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work for longer; it was an amazing experience that felt too short, despite it being the entire summer.

Advice

Seek Norwich alumni who are in construction. We are keenly focused on alumni within the military and three-letter agencies, but are seldom exposed to the ones building America. Additionally, once on site, whether it be on the construction site itself, or behind a computer designing MEP systems, give it your all and show them what Norwich students are capable of; that we are hardworking individuals that would work 14+ hours just to complete a task if that is what's in front of us.
