Saxbys

Student Cafe Executive Officer

April - September 2019 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I loved being able to work with an amazing team of people and grow my skills as a leader.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to get through the job training process faster so that I could have had more of a handle on my position earlier on.

Advice

Working with people can be really frustrating but it's also really rewarding. Saxbys is an amazing employer if you thrive in a positive work environment with challenging projects. I felt supported while with Saxbys, but also not coddled. It was an opportunity that I needed to grow as a student and as a person.

Barista

July 2018 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

Being a barista was a great way to spend the second half of my summer. Because it was an on-campus location, we didn't have a whole lot of traffic during the summer. I was able to really learn the techniques of being a barista without the pressure of crazy long lines, and making espresso drinks a ton of fun. I got to know the other people who worked there really well, and a lot of them are now good friends of mine. I also didn't have to commute a lot because I lived on campus during the summer.

What I wish was different

Nothing comes to mind!

Advice

If you're training to be a barista, take your time learning the techniques. It may take a bit to get the hang of but most of it is fairly straightforward, and sometimes there is more than one way to achieve the same result. Steaming perfect milk is tricky but very rewarding!
