Scenic America

Policy, Advocacy, and Research Intern

June - August 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I'm a double major in Environmental Studies and Government, so a policy internship in an environmental field was a perfect fit for me. It's a nice place to work because scenic conservation is not a controversial (and therefore partisan) topic issue, so the work you do may actually be incorporated into law.

What I wish was different

Obviously, these circumstances were unavoidable and felt by everyone across the country, but I wish I could have had more in-person interaction with my bosses and co-interns. While I was able to go into Scenic America's office in downtown Washington, DC a few times to check mail, I only met my bosses in person twice (masked and distanced of course).

Advice

Scenic America is a great and very successful organization, achieving national policy victories for scenic conservation in a highly polarized political climate. While it is a small group, this can be a positive because the interns have a heavy hand in Scenic's work. If you want to learn a lot about running a small nonprofit, this internship would be a great choice.
