Camp Counselor

May - July 2019 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I loved this job. I worked at SeaWorld for two summers as a camp counselor, teaching kids about marine wildlife and conservation with hands-on experiences and animal meet-and-greets. I usually worked with the youngest camps, which were groups of 5 and 6 year old kids. I love marine life and elementary education, so this summer job combined two of my passions seamlessly.

What I wish was different

I wish we had been able to request the age groups we wanted to work with. My strength is teaching and managing elementary school students, but we would be placed at random, so I was sometimes given a middle school camp to lead for a week. I do not feel that this was to anyone's advantage, as there were other counselors who would gladly have "traded" my middle school camp for their elementary school camp.

Advice

Be patient with children. They might have a short attention span but so many are tactile learners. When we can actually show them the animals we are teaching them about, they can see how their behaviors reflects what they're learning. It is so rewarding to watch their eyes light up as they find what they are passionate about.
