Farmer/Entrepeneur

May 2010 • Harrisburg, NE

What I liked

I worked on a family farm over the summer, the closeness of my family is very inspirational. I learn things such a good work ethic that helps carry me through other experiences, such as school. I also learn loyalty and other family values.

What I wish was different

Farming can be unpredictable and we sometimes find ourselves at the mercy of the times and of the weather. Farming is both fun and challenging, and it prepares you for complex environments you may encounter in the future. I decidedly recommend finding a job where you get to work with your hands as well as people you admire if at all possible.

Advice

Stick with it. Everything works out eventually.

Landscaper

May 2018 • Orchard Park, NY

What I liked

I loved working outside and having autonomy

What I wish was different

I wish I would've marketed my services earlier in the year using social media and brochures, rather than mid-summer

Advice

If you are working for yourself (especially in a service business), it is important to have the ambition to reach out to people, build a network, and find the work needed to support yourself financially. This is easier said than done.
