Self Employed

Tutoring

June 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

I liked meeting new people and be able to help them out with math.

What I wish was different

That there were more students.

Advice

You need to go out and explore and make connections in order to start your own job or if you want to change something about yourself. You need to take action and be persistent with what you have mind. Don’t let anyone tell you no for an answer and explore different approaches for a problem.

Private Piano teacher

January 2019 • Littleton, CO

What I liked

I enjoyed the flexibility of scheduling and ability to manage my own time. It is also something that I really enjoy doing.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have more consistent lessons, but due to the family being out of town, there were long gaps between some of our lessons.

Graphic Artist

May 2019 • Manchester, CT

What I liked

I really liked how I was able to turn my hobby of art into a business. It made "working" something I looked forward to and it motivated me to do better and continue so that I would not have to go back to a part-time job at a restaurant.

What I wish was different

Since I just began working as a graphic artist there was many things I experienced for the first time. I wish that I had talked to other graphic artists before I began so that they would give me their own advice!

Advice

I highly recommend doing research on the job before you begin actually doing it. Especially if it is a job you are doing on your own and where most of your customers are random people on the internet. There is certain rules you need set in place to avoid any miscommunication or getting scammed. I did plenty of research on how to complete the art orders that I was working on but learned customer service as orders came in. Therefore I wish I had looked into that earlier!

Swim Lesson Teacher

June 2019 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I liked being able to create my own schedule and work with my students and their parents directly, rather than through an organization. I felt like this created a more personal experience, and it was evident to them that I cared about their children.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have charged more for each lesson, but I did not because I did not realize my worth as a teacher at the beginning of the summer. I also wish I would have catered who I taught to more, rather than opening it up to the public and unreliable sources.

Advice

Organization is key when running your own business, and it is important to be yourself while also maintaining professionalism.

personal trainer

June 2019 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Ever since I started my career studies in criminal justice, I wanted to be as fit as possible and three years ago I got my personal trainer. Afterwards, I wanted to encourage my friends and people in general to be fit in order to be healthy and I get to get payed and do what I like. I go hired by L. A Fitness, but they payed so little that I started training people on my own and I got payed more so I resigned L.A Fitness, and now I continue to work even though I am still attending National Louis university.

What I wish was different

There is really nothing that I would want to be different. As a mother of three I am always busy, but I always find time to do multiple responsibilities

Advice

It is always important to work extra hard, because at the end of the day one will be rewarded. Therefore, what seems to be too much work will eventually payed off at the end of the day.
