Tutor

May - August 2020 • Orlando, FL

What I liked

I loved getting to know the kids I tutored and babysat!

What I wish was different

I wish I could have expanded my business to families outside my neighborhood that I did not know, but I couldn't do this since my parents were strict on who I could see during quarantine and people, in general, were less welcoming to strangers in their homes during this time.

Researcher

June - August 2020 • Portsmouth, NH

What I liked

It was a great opportunity to do my own research and get paid modestly for it. It was somewhat like getting paid to do your own schoolwork.

What I wish was different

I only wish I had more time to do it!

Advice

The research opportunity was a SURF grant. To anyone applying for a SURF grant I suggest getting connected with your mentor, or finding one who takes great interest in your work!

DoorDash Driver

August 2020 • Santa Clarita, CA

What I liked

I could choose my hours and work whenever fit my schedule. DoorDash often offered promos which included additional pay per delivery. Ranging from $1-$4 added on top of the regular earnings for that order, the most I made working a 6-hour day was $230. Also greatly depends on customers' tips.

What I wish was different

Opportunity to provide feedback about the customers and rude/poor experiences, as well as whether or not they gave any tip.

Advice

Only really reasonable to do this if you have an electric, hybrid, or fuel-efficient car. My 4-cyl Camry worked fairly well, however my friends who had Acura TLs found that they were spending way too much on gas considering they had to pay for premium on top of their cars using more gas.
