Sephora

Beauty Advisor

April 2017 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I love how the company culture is so fun and outgoing. They encourage the freedom to express yourself in whatever way you want to, which in my opinion, leads to a very inspirational atmosphere at work.

What I wish was different

It is a beauty advisor job, so you are expected to help out in every department when need be. I honestly don’t wish anything would be different about my job because I absolutely love it. It’s so much fun working there! (although, I do wish it had been an internship at HQ, but those are so so hard to get and are really competitive).

Advice

Never be afraid to express yourself! A lot of people think working at stores like MAC & Sephora are intimidating due to the high level of makeup artistry that these employees have, but honestly, I started out knowing NOTHING & I’ve come a long way from it.

Human Resources Intern

June - August 2021 • San Francisco, CA

What I liked

I was given the opportunity to do a rotation through HR. I was exposed to a number of different teams within the department, including the Recruitment team, Compliance team, Communications team and D&I team. It was an amazing experience where I was treated as an asset to the department and given meaningful work to complete. I was also given a lot of independence, with a good balance of guidance and teaching.

What I wish was different

I wish it had been in person! The experience would have been much more fulfilling in this way, though I understand it is the times we are in.

Advice

Take the opportunity (in whichever job opportunity or internship) to network! I was able to take advantage of the platform I was given and meet people, ask for career advice, get contacts etc. Your future job depends on networking and the connections you have.

Beauty Advisor

July 2018 • Robinson, PA

What I liked

Working at Sephora was a great way to spend my time learning skills in the workplace while pursuing my passion in beauty. Although it seems like it is "just a makeup store", it requires many interpersonal and professional skills that are helpful for future careers/internships. It's a job that I continue to keep because I live locally and genuinely enjoy.

What I wish was different

In a way since it is far from campus but close to my permanent residence, it is a little difficult to consistency commute on the weekends. However, I have a great team and manager so there is flexibility if I have school related events that I should stay on campus for.

Advice

If there aren't many internships available, obtaining a job that is unrelated to your major or career path is still very beneficial. Especially over doing nothing.
