What I liked

Truly a wonderful place to work. Very friendly people that are very easy to get along with. Super cool technology. All the advantages of a big company but with fewer drawbacks because business units are largely independent.

What I wish was different

I wish I had gotten to work with more teams and departments.

Advice

Take the jump, its worth it. I can't recommend this place enough.

Environment, Health & Safety Intern

What I liked

There was a very personable staff and a wide variety of different tasks to do on a daily basis. I was also given the independence to work on individual projects that would have impacts on the functioning of the EHS department and the site as a whole.

What I wish was different

I had a great time with this internship. If I could change anything, I wish I had taken more time to be 'integrated' into the site as a whole rather than simply into my department. I would have liked to explore a bit more what other employees were working on in other buildings.

Advice

Don't be afraid to reach out to people and ask questions. People are generally nice and recognize that you're learning and want to help.

People very pleasant to work with and pays well. Gained a lot of front-end experience using AngularJS, state management, and libraries.

What I wish was different

It was remote so I wish it would have been in person. Possibly because it was remote, I didn't get to work with other team members very much but I wish I had.

They did an amazing job ensuring that I would keep my internship during the pandemic and sent me a laptop and found me work to do at home. They made sure to get me into the lab and work with my peers once things quieted down.

Reliability engineering intern

What I liked

My boss helps me cater my experience and projects to what I am interested in learning, prioritizes my education while I’m working part time, and is open and honest with me about my performance. I love the flexibility of my hours and work, and I also feel supported and challenged so it has been a great environment to learn. Plus, this past summer (2019) more interns were hired by my team so I got to problem solve with peers and gain experience leading/organizing people. This was both fun, challenging, and gave me a new perspective on the workforce.

What I wish was different

I wish Issaquah wasn’t so far/I didn’t need a car to get there. It might make my life easier if my boss set up clearer expectations, but i think that would ultimately just limit my freedom my opportunity to find creative solutions.

Advice

People are 9 times out of 10 more than happy to help you as long as you take initiative, show that you have thought through your problem, and come to them with specific questions. I fully believe that you are fully in control of how much you get out of an internship/job experience based on him much initiative you take, even if you get stuck working with a bad team.

What I liked

I liked the independence of the position, as much of the work involved figuring things out myself. I also enjoyed being exposed to how complex mechatronic systems work.

What I wish was different

I wasn't a big fan of how the company was run. The work environment didn't give me a lot of motivation or excitement, but if you are very motivated you'll still find the work rewarding.

Advice

Learn to proactively find work to do, in the workplace people don't usually assign you specific tasks to complete.

Dont be afraid to reach out to people working in roles you aspire to work in one day. Generally, people are welcoming and open and appreciate giving advice to young professionals.

What I liked

The research in the laboratory was interesting and I loved learning about all of the different procedures my group went through for the 12 projects we had to work on all at once. I also liked the work environment a lot, especially within my group and with the other interns that summer.

What I wish was different

I don't really have anything in mind, the whole experience was wonderful!

Advice

Networking is what gets you a job, not blind online applications. If a boss doesn't know your face or anyone you know, no matter what you will have a lower chance at getting a position that you want. It isn't impossible, though, just not ideal or reliable.

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the company, the workload, and the flexibility offered to all employees.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to find a place to live closer to work. Unfortunately, I had to commute from Milwaukee to Hoffman Estates everyday.

Advice

I would say, everyone should keep their mind open. Just because you have a major and a field of study doesn't necessarily mean that you will be confined to that when you are in industry.
