What I liked

My internship at Skyward felt like the perfect bridge between school and a career. Skyward's first priority with interns is to grow and teach them, which I definitely experienced over the course of my internship. Emphasis is placed on understanding rather than just getting projects done, leading to a friendly and encouraging culture. Additionally, the projects you work on used by real customers, meaning you get to make a real impact on others. I enjoyed working with both my fellow interns as well as other employees in the company. I accepted a full-time position following my internship and I am thrilled to begin my career here.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply for the internship or to take on hard projects while here, even if you feel like you're not quite ready. There will be people to help you along the way and your skills will greatly benefit because of it.

What I liked

You're given all the training necessary to do your job, no matter your skill level coming into the internship. Everyone is super nice and willing to answer any questions you might have or help you when you need it. You get to work on real projects that matter a lot, so the work is meaningful.

What I wish was different

I wish I could've been able to meet all of my fellow co-workers in person, but the internship was remote due to COVID.

Advice

Be ready and willing to learn a lot.

What I liked

I enjoyed the fact that Skyward made a serious investment in my training and skills in order to help me become a better developer. In the past 3 semesters of working for them, I have had the opportunity to learn several new skills and to work on several valuable projects for both internal systems and Skyward's flagship software product. Its very exciting to learn how to do something, and then see customers being able to use and appreciate updates that you, the intern, made. Any feedback I may have is taken seriously; I have seen improvements to trainings or processes made based on what myself or other interns have suggested. There is also an emphasis placed on forming relationships with your teammates, even in a covid remote work environment. I am excited to start my full-time career with Skyward post-graduation.

Advice

The most important thing for this job is a willingness to learn. Skyward will provide all the knowledge, you just have to be ready to absorb it, and work with your team to apply it.

What I liked

Skyward really supports your development as both a programmer and a professional regardless of your plans for the future. They put in the time to look at your individual strengths and set you up to be as successful as possible while also providing lots of opportunity for training in areas that would benefit you. Skyward recognizes the needs of every person on their team and works very hard to ensure those needs are met.

What I wish was different

I began my internship remotely and intend to move to the Stevens Point area to go full-time. I wish I had more of an opportunity to experience the in-person Skyward environment, but my team is very well equipped for remote work.

Advice

Skyward is a place that enables you to develop your programming skills for the future, but only if you choose to. Taking on challenges that you are unfamiliar with is the only way to really grow, so pursue opportunities to learn new things! Going outside your comfort zone on a project can be intimidating, but Skyward is a team oriented company with a large network of developers who are more than happy to help you achieve your goals.

What I liked

Everyone at Skyward is extremely nice and helpful and want you to succeed in what you are there to do. The experience working for Skyward is one of the best internship experiences I could have hoped for.
