Sales Associate

April - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

Got to spend time outside. Worked with really nice people. Very flexible with my schedule. Good management.

What I wish was different

Some of the tasks were either tedious or very uncomfortable. Some customers could be extremely rude and unfriendly.

Advice

Always do the right and be responsible. Because even if you think nobody will notice, most of the time people are watching and they will start to appreciate the things you do.

Cart Associate

June 2019 • Geneseo, NY

What I liked

Working as a cart associate over the summer allowed me to gain experience working for customers by helping them carry out large or heavy items. Being a labor job, it was physically straining and required determination to continue walking around on hot pavement in the scorching sun. It was difficult during business rushes because there weren't many other cart associates working with myself, and so it was a challenge to keep up with the carts at busy times. But this taught me endurance and perseverance, as well as set standards for me that show how far I'm willing to go before I call it quits. And I liked that.

What I wish was different

As strenuous as it was, and is, it has set clear standards for me that allow me to work harder on my degree so that I don't have to work future labor jobs like this to maintain a comfortable lifestyle regarding food and a place to live. It's a great opportunity for a part-time worker who needs money outside of school, but overall I wish it hadn't been so physical. Despite hearts pounding and gasping for air, if we were found without a cart in our hand by management, they would say we need to get back to it. There were only 4 total cart pushers at the time and to maintain the parking lot is at least a 3-4 person job. Especially on busy days. But usually only 1-2 people were working at a time. Sometimes 3. It was difficult to keep up with the carts and we were allowed no room to breathe when it came to this. We were expected, and we tried, to keep up with carts all day long. Whether it was 90° F or 70° F and pouring, we had to be out there. We were aware of this because we had signed up for it, but when it came to management, we were treated like physical machines rather than human laborers. People were inconsiderate of us. So, simply I wish we had the actual amount of other cart associates to calmly keep up with business all day long. Without others, it was a constant and exhausting struggle.

Advice

I would suggest to one that if what they need is a money-making opportunity to support themselves or their family with food and a place to live, it's not the worst thing in the world by any means. It could be better, yes. But after six months of working while in school I'm getting a promotion to a less physical job for better pay. In the long run, it gives you insight on what you don't want to do the rest of your life and motivates you to work harder in the future, by working harder in the present. It was a difficult job, but it's worth the outcome.

Home/Apparel

January 2017 - November 2018 • Mustang, OK

What I liked

My working experience at Walmart was wonderful.I had amazing management that helped guide to to know the sales floor and never once had a horrible experience there. What I loved about working at Walmart is the work itself, stocking. It may sound weird, but the feeling of helping a customer find an item that was "hard to find" just shows your dedication.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different is the staffing management. When the truck comes with all of the products and it should be organized into their own pallets with over 12 hours of work and only two part-time associates they will not get it done. Working in the home department each of the department are separated with their own legitimate hours and only two associates to work a total of three different section with only 5 hours isn't always that great.

Advice

One piece of advice I give about my experience at Walmart is have fun. I know working is not all fun and games but prove to your higher ups that you are a hardworking person and please please please try and gain some customer service experience because it will definitely come in handy in the future.

Management

Advice

Don't let managers scare or lie to you in a workplace, stand up to them with the REAL policies (STAY WITHIN POLICY IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO THIS)(example: manager tells you that you have to do something, if you're a little suspicious, ask politely to see the policy that says you can, if they cant show you then that's the end of it and they will find someone else to break that policy.) A coworker of mine was too short for a few things so a manager told her to just climb the shelves, reason being, "its too slow to go find a ladder" (which is AGAINST POLICY) and I informed her that she could get in a lot of trouble for doing that, she stopped and, yea it takes her a lot longer to do her job, but now she isn't at risk of getting fired. The manager was mad but couldn't do anything because it's within policy. Once you start doing that and they realize they can't use the scare tactic on you to get you to do 10x the work, stuff that could get you fired, or work that isn't your job, your job gets a lot easier. They actually start to get scared of you because you know the real rules, and know your rights. That's something no manager wants. Manipulation is a KEY part of most managers at most workplaces, be careful. TL;DR:::::: READ THE POLICY, THAT OVERRIDES MANAGERS

Deli Worker

June - August 2019 • Walker, LA

What I liked

I enjoyed the amount I got paid. I wasn't expecting more than minimum wage, but I was pleasantly surprised at the relatively high hourly rate for such a position.

What I wish was different

I wish I would been able to... work something closer to what I actually want to be. Something more English/History related and less related to ham and cheese.

Advice

Working in deli gets better pay than other jobs at Walmart because of it needing more training, but Walmart as a company has a pretty toxic environment so the best advice I can give is to try and not make friends. They will just break your heart, they don't actually care about you in the slightest. I wish it wasn't the case but it was very true for where I was working.
