Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

Conservationist Intern

May 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I enjoyed the fact that it was a paid experience, and that I worked virtually. I got to visit the office for a week in D.C. and enjoyed meeting my coordinator and making lots of influential connections.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to do it fully in person.

Advice

Take anything that's offered to you, and don't be afraid to work with larger organizations! Take risks, and apply!

Festival Intern

June - August 2016 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I got to work with some really great people and got too use my language skills and help spread information on the Basque people.

What I wish was different

Advice

This job is a lot of work, a lot of commitment, but it pays off in the end. You make bonds with people from around the country and world and get to work and have access to one of the best museums in the world

Archival Intern

May - July 2018 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work with other people who enjoyed folk music, the humanities, and writing about cultural history. My office was really diverse, too, with people from many different countries and backgrounds, which was refreshing.

What I wish was different

I wish the Smithsonian had subsidized my transit fares. The D.C. Metro is pretty expensive.

Advice

If you are really interested in something like folk music or cultural documentation, things that are not usually represented at career fairs, do some searching on your own and I think you can find some pretty cool internships.
