About Software Engineering Institute/Carnegie Mellon University

Assured software—functioning as intended and free of vulnerabilities—is critical to the system capabilities that U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), civilian government, and industry organizations need to achieve their missions.

Software-enabled systems deliver the rich system functionality and network connectivity that can assure mission readiness, boost productivity, spur innovation, and provide a competitive edge. The complexity and interconnectness of those systems, however, expose organizations to heightened risk from disruptive, damaging events and cyber attacks.

For over three decades, the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) has been helping government and industry organizations to acquire, develop, operate, and sustain software systems that are innovative, affordable, enduring, and trustworthy. We serve the nation as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and based at Carnegie Mellon University, a global research university annually rated among the best for its programs in computer science and engineering.

Delivering value across a spectrum from R&D to technology adoption

We research software and cybersecurity problems of considerable complexity, create and test innovative technologies, and transition maturing solutions to widespread use. Using tools, technologies, and practices developed or matured by the SEI, the DoD and other government agencies can meet mission goals through improvements that include
◾more efficient and agile development of software-reliant capabilities
◾improved software project cost estimation
◾reduced risk due to software vulnerabilities
◾more resilient cyber systems and networks
◾reduced sustainment costs
◾a workforce skilled in the acquisition of complex, secure software systems

We also work with commercial organizations that are interested in gaining a strategic advantage by maturing or applying improved software engineering and cybersecurity technology.

Applying our organizational values every day

We strive to live out our core values of excellence, integrity, impact, teamwork, and urgency in all of our interactions, inside the organization and with our customers and collaboration partners.
