What I liked

Working with other St. John's students and leaders, and getting to know new incoming students.

What I wish was different

Nothing, it was a great experience and a great team to be a part of.

Advice

Be open to new experiences and new people. Exposing yourself to new experiences and people is a skill that can be applied to jobs universally and learning how to do that and step outside of your comfort zone is super important.

Student Researcher

May 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked working hands-on with different technologies when collecting and analyzing data.

What I wish was different

I wish we were able to continue research this fall in-person, however, due to the current situation, I understand the need to continue our work remotely.

Advice

One piece of advice that I would share about this experience would be to take advantage of the different opportunities that come your way. This position has allowed me to present research at national conferences and network with other individuals in my field.

Camp Operations Team Leader

May - August 2019 • Jamaica, NY

What I liked

I liked the department manager that oversaw Camp Operations.

What I wish was different

The upper-management was ineffective in representing and defending their camp operations team. We were constantly harassed, screamed at, and manipulated by the guests of the university. The team members consistently made our complaints apparent with our division manager as well as upper management and no corrective actions were taken. We were told to "stop the drama," and we were expected to 'tough it out' until the guests departed the University. There were even issues of legality as far as guests violating both state and national law, and these complaints were also disregarded. We were subjected to horrible hours, sometimes beginning work at 10 AM and being finished as late as 1-2 AM with no opportunity for breaks, or working 7 AM until 9 PM with very limited time for breaks.

Advice

This job is best for students who desperately need experience in Hospitality Management.

Conference Services Team Leader

May 2017 • New York, NY

What I liked

Being a Computer Science major it allowed me to use various other programs and databases that I would not have necessarily used such as Trello, Oracle, EPM, Access, and Social Tables to name a few.

What I wish was different

I wish there could have been a little bit more training on how to properly use the technical equipment.

Advice

My piece of advice that I would share is to always be on top of what is going on. Make sure before you clock in for work you know before hand what exactly needs to be done and where to go instead of wasting time to see where to go and what to do when you could have already been there doing that.

Facilities Call Center

September 2017 • New York, NY

What I liked

I like the fact that the job gave me new friends and somehow made me responsible in a way where I'm always timely to everything now. I also feel that it's helped me enhance my communication skills as well whether it's by asking questions to my manager, coworkers, techs or even the people calling on the phones. I also like the fact that when it isn't busy in the office, we are able to get our schoolwork done so it creates a good balance between school and work. I also love the fact that the job is flexible which creates an even better balance.

What I wish was different

There isn't anything I would change about this job. Maybe just more coffee options, LOL.

Advice

I would say that during training, definitely take notes because it is ALOT to capture in your head at first and you can't remember everything. For example, it's answer phones, make tickets, close tickers, call the elevator company, call the pest control company, etc. It gets very specific, so I think in order to do well on the job, definitely take notes you can refer to in the beginning so you remember the tasks throughout the years you work there.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I like the problem-solving skills that this research opportunity is equipping me with. My research team and I hypothesize the kind of results that we expect to have, and if/when the reality is different, we adapt and modify our thinking. Research is teaching me the fine art of perseverance and failing forward. Any mistake made is one more way learned of how not to approach the experiment. Furthermore, it highlights the practical relevance of the theoretical scientific principles involved.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had started earlier. With all that I am continuously learning through the course of research so far, two years seems too short to work on the project.

Advice

The final result is only half as satisfying as all that you learn getting to it. As much as you would like for the experience to embellish your resumé, make a lasting meaning of every moment of it.

Facilities & AV Operations Assistant

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

Working alongside fellow St. John’s students and getting to know the community more. Being able to interact and help others during this job felt amazing! I felt like a superhero everytime someone needed assistance and I was able to help them out properly thanks to my training.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to follow up with the people I helped out and get their feedback. Since workers are constantly moving around in such a fast-paced environment, we don’t have time to hear feedback from them.

Advice

No one said work is going to be easy. You’re going to be constantly on your feet and moving around. Be aware, be patient, and keep smiling. No one wants a negative Nancy around!
