Human Resources Intern

January - May 2019 • Clearwater, FL

What I liked

I liked working in the focus groups to see how a business runs those and meeting new people.

What I wish was different

Marketing Intern

January 2018 • Largo, FL

What I liked

Wonderful team; flexible and productive environment; a reason to attend events that may not have been otherwise relevant to me; design and copy heavy work; the freedom to draft and pitch campaigns, allowing practice that bolstered my performance in my professional Social Coordinator job; and the opportunity to decorate my desk. :)

What I wish was different

For an internship, this opportunity was a true blessing - although the pay was still low, it was more than many surrounding retail businesses. I do wish the pay was higher and I do wish I had been able to work more than 29 hours a week, but these are not faults in the grand scheme.

Advice

Dress nice and take initiative - this is a position that allows you the freedom to suggest, brainstorm, expand and implement ideas through team effort.

Student Assistant in Marketing

January - December 2018 • Largo, FL

What I liked

Fantastic, detail-oriented team that opened up a lot of opportunity and learning for me. The manager Lise was also fantastic in working with my schedule and making sure that any hesitations I had were heard. I felt very human here, and was not pressured to overwork, which made me want to learn the most and do the best I could while covering events and helping market the college.

What I wish was different

I do wish certain mentors would've been more available, but it's not their fault. I did not feel entirely comfortable reaching out (I still felt like an intern even though they made me feel like a peer) and everyone had large jobs to do that were always fluctuating (due to the communications portion).

Advice

Worthwhile, especially if you struggle with networking and social anxiety. Having a reason to immerse yourself in events you wouldn't regularly attend to photograph (while being warmly welcomed) helps you meet a wide array of people while also inviting you to explore careers you wouldn't have considered otherwise. Be ready to grow more comfortable with this.
