STEM exCEL

Summer Camp

June - August 2018 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

I liked teaching kids how to build and program robots, something fun and technology related. I liked the wage as well. I additionally liked the fixed schedule and routine.

What I wish was different

In some of the Rec Centers where we held the summer camps, I wish we had been given better rooms/accommodations , but that's about it.

Advice

Be prepared to handle kids that don't want to participate and want to run away from your field of vision. If you can do that, the rest is relatively easy and enjoyable.

Senior Instructor

December 2014 - September 2018 • Fairfax, VA

What I liked

Summer camps are one of the most hectic, yet rewarding processes with STEM. Leading teams of 2-3 instructors and teaching classes of 15-40 children can really keep you on your toes for your knowledge of STEM fields.

Advice

Knowing your specialty skills is very helpful when teaching others, especially young children. Teaching students in groups can really make you think about how a particular concept works. For example, teaching programming classes solidifies your understanding of core processes like flow control.
