Environmental Intern

January 2022 • Galloway, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed the fact that I was able to gain professional experience with the guidance of industry professionals to answer my questions along the way.

What I wish was different

I do wish that some of the tasks were a bit more involved, but seeing that it is an internship, I think it's understandable to be granted rather simple tasks.

Advice

I would highly recommend anyone interested in applying for an internship position commit to the decision. The experience and connections are worth more than anything in terms of developing a career.

Transition Activity Leaders of New Students (Stockton T.A.L.O.N.S.)

June 2019 • Galloway Township, NJ

What I liked

Working at Stockton over the summer is so rewarding. It makes this university feel more like a home when you spend the summer here as well. Working with new students is my favorite part of the job because my experience at Stockton has been great, and I love being able to add to other students' experience. The staff is together a lot, so we get really close, and then with Smithville and tons of beaches and zoos and other summer activities so close to us, we are always doing something together on the weekend. I think this job is the perfect balance between a summer job and still enjoying free time in the summer.

What I wish was different

The wage is calculated hourly, but we are paid monthly. So being there 4 weeks in the summer with no biweekly or weekly pay was probably the biggest downside of the job.

Advice

This job is one of the most rewarding positions I've had at Stockton. The interactions with faculty, staff, and students are irreplaceable, but your heart has to be in it if you take this position! This is the job for you if you love Stockton, want to have an impact, or love helping and working with people of all ages!

Undergraduate Researcher

January 2018 • Galloway Township, NJ

What I liked

The faculty were profound in their ability to express their own philosophical thoughts on science, math, medicine, and technological advances. Majoring in biochemistry has molded me into a more well-versed individual along with minoring in behavioral neuroscience, which has mirrored my love for health and wellness. Community-oriented and zealous, a spirit for justice in bioethics and passion for discovering a myriad of possibilities for growth and potential. Integration of hands-on research and being immersed in a rich environment for team building has encompassed the evolution of biomedical sciences.

What I wish was different

Unlike other universities, Stockton's limited range of master's programs for biomedical intensive programs has shown to be a shock. With more funding targeted at the analysis of proteins, chemical compounds, and neural stem cell fates, the programs available are inclusive and private. By expanding the interest in neuroscience or biochemistry molecular biology, individuals hold the power to ignite a trend in the nation's habits, cultural movements, and other ideologies. For instance, bio ethical laws have been created to protect certain lobbyists and international agencies from overcoming the boundaries of normal social standards and protocols. Ergo, the guidelines protect manufacturing companies, grounded industries, and organizations from angled attacks on their human rights.

Advice

One single essential piece of advice that I would share regarding this experience is to continue to learn in multiple fields of studies, as exploration leads to diverse thought. Perceptions that riddle the mind are challenged and many fail to actualize their dreams before the path has begun. As a result, one has to seek the paradigm shift in the ripple effects of laws, policies, and attitudes passed onto the next generation. Due to the onset of anxiety, fear, and irrational behavior, students tackle these rough issues by negative or even toxic actions in self-harm. Always seek help when a crisis has happened to you.

Environmental Intern

January 2019 • Galloway Township, NJ

What I liked

I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of environmental projects, ranging from endangered and invasive species management to well inventorying and report-writing. This internship has given me a variety of hands-on experiences that would otherwise be hard to come by all in one place. Another great aspect is that you can continue until you graduate, which means you can gain multiple years of experience in the environmental field before graduation.

What I wish was different

Because the internship program is a partnership between Stockton and the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, it involves a lot of travel to NJDMAVA sites throughout the state. Some days consisted of a lot of driving, which cut our time in the field short.

Advice

If a position opens up, definitely apply! You'll gain loads of useful experience and make connections with NJDMAVA employees and contractors, which can help you find a job after graduation.

SSEP Student Researcher

September 2018 • Galloway Township, NJ

What I liked

With this experience I was able to work closely with a faculty adviser and other student researchers to propose and design an experiment to be sent to the International Space Station. It gave me the opportunity to experience what its like to be a research scientist. By working together as a team we were able to optimize our experiment through critical thinking. It gave me an experience of a lifetime!

What I wish was different

Honestly nothing, this experience was amazing for me as a student. Being able to see something that we had created go to space was an unforgettable moment.

Advice

The most important piece of advice I would like to share is that you should never give up. In science we fail all the time but we have to be able to use that failure to better our experiments.

Student Worker

March 2019 • Galloway Township, NJ

What I liked

Everyone in the office is very kind; it's a welcoming atmosphere. Bosses understand and emphasize that school comes first and encourage you to take time off when you think you may need it.

What I wish was different

At times, I wished there had been more work to do to keep me busy but I appreciated that they wanted to give me as many hours as possible, even during slower months.

Advice

Formally set workload expectations with your bosses in advance, and always talk to your bosses about anything you think could become an issue before it can get to that point.
