Stokes Nature Center

Summer Camp Instructor

June - July 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

What I loved about being a summer camp instructor was building relationships with the kids and helping them build relationships with each other all in a nature setting. It was magical to take these kids to areas of Logan Canyon that I love so much and getting to show them how incredible the trees, river, and animals are.

What I wish was different

I wish the summer camp could have been longer than two weeks!

Advice

Kids are stronger and more resilient than we give them credit for. By showing them and patience, they often reveal solutions to problems and a deep intelligence that would've have guessed otherwise.

PR and Marketing - Special Events Intern

May - October 2018 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I loved the freedom they gave me to really tailor my internship experience. They obviously had things that I had to complete on a consistent basis, but generally, I had freedom to use my skills that I already had to develop skills I was interested in learning. They also have a very positive work environment, and were very helpful in general when it came to things I didn't know how to do. It was a great environment for a learner, and I had a very positive experience and really got to take ownership over my projects that I worked on. I walked away with a wealth of knowledge and awesome portfolio/resume pieces that I can now take to other employers in the future.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been compensated. I put a lot of time into the projects I worked on while I was there. However, I understand that they are a non-profit, and funds have to be allocated very carefully. But honestly, this was a very minor frustration to me, and I was fine being unpaid most of the time because the experience I was getting was so valuable to me.

Advice

If you are going to do this particular internship, make sure you are self motivated. It's a pretty "go at your own pace but meet deadlines" environment. That worked well for me, but if you need a more rigid timeline or more structured due dates, this may be more difficult.
