Risk Management Intern

June - September 2020 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Although this ended up to be a work from home internship, I was impressed with how structured and immersive it still was. Despite how large this company is, everyone is very friendly and supportive. Everyone pushes you to challenge yourself; to learn, experience, and absorb as much as you can. I would highly recommend this internship program to anyone with an interest in commodity risk management, finance, marketing, brokerage, trading, market analysis, and much more.

What I wish was different

I wish it could have been in person but that was not possible due to COVID-19. I also wish I didn't have to get permission to access so many sensitive files that I most certainly needed in order to make progress on my projects.

Advice

Make sure you have a detailed outline of your long term and short term goals. It is very important that you know ahead of time what you want to get out of this internship because it is very independent and self-driven. The more prepared you are, the more you will get out of this internship. Also, I can't stress enough how important it is that you practice good, professional, clear, and constant communication with your fellow interns, and superiors. Lastly, make sure you get all mandatory intro courses and legal paperwork completed and out of the way ASAP because trust me, there is a LOT of that you'll have to fill out before you can even start your internship so the sooner you get that done the better. They will have numerous projects, presentations, and courses lined up for you -- don't let yourself get overwhelmed because you're most likely not going to have enough time to complete everything and they set it up like that for a reason. Time management and consistency is key factor to success here.

Intern

May - August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Great mentors who listened to questions we had and allowed us to engage in their day to day responsibilities. They were very gracious to help increase our hourly wage to account for the high living expenses in Chicago. We had projects that allowed us to be very flexible with hours. We worked in the Chicago Federal Reserve Building in downtown, which was just an incredible experience to see businesswomen and men who were probably very important.

What I wish was different

Sometimes we felt like we weren't being useful and just a burden. They all had jobs so we didn't want to bug them too much to ask for more work.

Advice

Ask questions! You will only take away as much as you put into it, so asking questions will allow you broaden your knowledge base from experts in the field you are looking at.

Quantitative Risk Analyst Intern

May - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

They really treated me similarly to their full time analysts and gave me actual real world work that they needed to measure risk on their positions.

What I wish was different

Probably a transportation stipend. MTA was very expensive.

Advice

Always ask for more work and make yourself known to your employer.
