Academic Associate in Emergency Medicine Research

August 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

Through this internship, I have the opportunity to screen for and conduct clinical research studies going on in Stony Brook University Hospital's Emergency Department. From my time here, I have learned how the emergency room functions and have gained invaluable experience interacting with patients and medical professionals of various specialties.

What I wish was different

I hoped to witness care providers doing procedures on patients and to interact more with physicians and nurses other than asking for a patient's chart. While I value the interactions I have with clinical nursing assistants and other supportive staff, I expected, per the description on Handshake, that I would learn more about practicing medicine/medical research from physicians. I also wish we received mentoring through this program, to help guide us along our paths to our preferred careers, as this would supplement the lack of direct interaction with care providers in the emergency room.

Advice

This internship requires students to be confident in their abilities, as you have to speak to patients with a self-assured tone so that they are willing to listen to you as you inform them of a study for which they are eligible. Even if you are not the best verbal communicator, this experience grants the opportunity to improve communication skills through conversing with patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

Undergraduate Geriatric Intern

September 2019 • Stony Brook, NY

What I liked

My favorite part was the patient interaction experience. We were allowed to conduct the different tests of the Annual Medical Wellness visit and ask the patient questions independently.

What I wish was different

Some weeks were very slow if not many AMWs were scheduled. Also, without your own car, it's hard to reach the clinic since the shuttle bus only comes once every hour.
