What I liked

My mentors worked hard to ensure that my project aligned very closely with my interests and passions. Additionally, they allowed me to work extremely independently, helping me when I needed a nudge in the right direction, but giving me the opportunity to figure things out for myself first. After I completed my summer project, I was able to tackle an additional project of my choosing and propose/implement a solution exactly as a full-timer would, which was a great experience to see what the real job would be like. Every person I was surrounded by was exceptionally intelligent (Including the other interns) but still very friendly and willing to help with even simple tasks. The HR team works hard to create a great company culture by planning many inventive social events!

What I wish was different

Because the work is so independent I didn't get to know my team as well as I would've liked, but the times we did get together for lunch were really fun!

Advice

STR is a great company for people who like to delve deep into problems and engineer technical solutions. I wouldn't recommend this place for people who like being assigned very straightforward tasks.

Electrical Engineering Intern

What I liked

I really enjoyed the flexibility of working at STR. The management and HR team really takes care of the employees-- there are a lot of chances to move around and work in different projects/groups to grow into fields of interest. As an intern, there probably will not be time to start new projects but from my experience there is a lot of effort that goes in to getting interns matched with relevant and interesting projects. There was also a lot of nice events for both interns and the whole company. On another note, interns are treated like normal employees. As an intern, you will work on projects as a new member of a team (or be tasked an entirely independent project). There's a big difference between working with a team/having a mentor and purely working under a mentor!

What I wish was different

Not much. I really can't complain about anything!

Advice

STR is a pretty great company and has a passionate group of researchers. If you're interested in any of the fields they do, I really encourage you to take a look.

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

The people I worked with at STR were extremely kind and intelligent, which made for a great working environment. The work given to interns is also real work that has an impact on the larger team project. In addition, the internship program is also very well-structured, with discussions with project and company leaders, intern social events (like trivia, painting night), and final presentations. I really enjoyed my summer at STR!

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to have a bit more exposure to how your team's/division's work fits into all the work that STR does.

Advice

My project was a largely independent project, with check-ins and support from my mentor and team whenever needed. With my project, I would give advice to go into an STR internship with motivation and good time management skills, and you will be able to accomplish a huge amount in a summer when those are combined with STR's support.

Cyber Security Co-Op

What I liked

I enjoyed the work here. They really care about their employees and interns. The education I learned from school was easily applied to the tasks at hand. Also, I learned valuable knowledge during the co-op that will help me throughout my career. My favorite part about this co-op was that I knew that my work was going to make an impact to both employees and customers.

What I wish was different

Nothing. It was perfect. The only thing I could wish for was to be there for a longer period of time.

Advice

For anyone applying for jobs or internships, I would recommend looking into STR. Try to meet them at your career fairs and get to know more about the company. STR was simply AMAZING! You will not regret your decision by working here.

Software Engineering Intern

What I liked

I loved that I was working on innovative software that was being readily used by other team members as well as being delivered directly to our customer. It was awesome that I got to meet our customers and actually interact with them at demos and check-ins.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been more opportunity to learn about my major and exercise my major's skills and practices. At certain points I felt lost and didn't have someone who had the expertise that I could turn to.

Advice

STR is a great company and the people you meet are amazing. One piece of advice I would give to those applying is to actually meet them at the career fair and show that you're also a great person, someone who could fit into their company culture.
