Asset Analyst Intern

June - September 2019 • La Jolla, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed that this firm was small and that it felt like a family community. They catered lunch every workday and my boss encouraged me to ask a lot of questions. I was very green in the commercial real estate industry and each executive member (from accounting to asset management to investor's relations) allowed me to help them with their projects. I sat in on asset manager's phone calls, investor's presentations, and executive team meetings. I enjoyed that I was given space to learn the fundamentals of each branch of an investment firm.

What I wish was different

I wish that my assignments would have been a little more organized where I knew the expectations for outcomes. I experienced learning without much direction, which did not give my experiences a clear objective.

Advice

I would share that a company's environment is extremely important. The atmosphere and size of a company strongly impact your work experience. Internships are a great way to understand whether you like the intimate setting of a small work environment or if you prefer an independent setting of a large business corporation. Also, internships are a great way to get into an industry. They are one of the few chances where your bosses will be happy (and expect) to teach you basics from the ground up. And never be afraid to ask questions!
