I liked being able to support new incoming students to UCR.
What I wish was different
To have had in person orientation rather than remote orientation.
Advice
To apply to be a highlander orientation leader at least once during your time at UCR. It helps you connect more with the UCR student body.

Orientation Leader
June - August 2018 • Riverside, CA
What I liked
I liked how I was able to meet other amazing leaders and also the opportunity to educate incoming first year about what resources UCR has to offer
What I wish was different
There was nothing I would wish to be different
Advice
This experience has taught me empathy and patience because most of these students come from different background and history, so when they come to a new environment, it's important for us to create a safe environment where they would be able to excel academically as well as socailly.

Director of CMU Community Garden
March 2018 • Grand Junction, CO
What I liked
Working outside is always great, but the independence to manage my own time and decide what to plant in the garden was wonderful. Growing things is so much fun!!
What I wish was different
I had a hard time getting students involved over the summer-either they go home or they are busy with summer classes and most people don't think that gardening sounds fun until they get their hands dirty and see how amazing it is to grow delicious and beautiful food!
Advice
Wear sunscreen and make friends with the bees (:
